May:

26-Jerry Fulk gave a Memorial Day tribute by remembering Club members for their service that are no longer with us.  Tyler Arciaga, football coach from San Ysidro High thanked the Club for their donation to 11 of their football team.  Congratulations to our own Boys Oratorical winner who won the SoCal District competition on Saturday at our Quarterly meeting!  A reminder about Movie Night this Sunday the 29, with all the funds going to our Building Fund. On Saturday, July 16, we are having another Padre Night.  See Al Zimmer for the $30.00 tickets...they are playing the SF Giants!  Our guest speaker was Greg Williams and Marby Callback from the San Diego Bird Rescue.  They brought many "feathered friends" for us to see, pet and play with....we had a lot of fun with them!!

19-Christine Hawley received our final scholarship, we reviewed the minutes from the Board meeting,possible Padres Night will be on Saturday July 16 against the SF Giants (info. to follow), we need more 4-somes for our Golf Tournament on June 10 (contact Chuck Hamilton), we also need auction items for the dinner (contact Ronny Perry) Chili Cook-off went well

12-Our scholarships were given to 5 recipients, each receiving $1000.00.  The students were Alexandra Leopold, Connie Huynh, Jessica Nicasio, Gabriel Montero-Stabile and Franoly Rocha.  They were from different local high schools.

5-We had a nice Cinco de Mayo breakfast today, we were reminded of the chili Cookoff on the 15th, and the Golf Tournament on June 10. Our guest speaker was our member Marlene Reyes. She did a fascinating presentation on her life from being born in Jamaica. moving to New York and working with Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and Lionel Richie at Motown Records.  If you missed her presentation, she is writing a book all about it.

7- Our evening meeting was our Boys Oratorical contest!  We had 7 boys who wrote and spoke about the same topic as the girls "If I were the leader of the Free World" and what they had to say was wonderful. Many were concerned about the energy levels being depleted in the world and how they would solve that problem.

31- Our Student Appreciation Night was a great success with 18 schools being represented. Each school had to choose one 6th grade student who best represented optimism as well as offering a helping hand to others. Saturday April 2, was the "Future Leader Summit"
at Long Beach for OI.  A reminder of our Golf Tournament on June 10 with the cost of a four-some is $125.00 for play and dinner and Silent Auction. Contact Chuck Hamilton for info.

24- We had a presentation about the new Swim Class by Frank Selez who runs this free program every weekend for our local kids. We also presented Ahmad with two plaques of appreciation for helping families that he will take back to Israel with him.  Lucille and Bert LeMieux then presented a lesson about earning your Personal Assessment within the Optimists. They showed us the new booklets and offered help with anyone wanting to achieve more personal growth.

February:

24- We had our Club update from our Board meeting we had on the 16th...it was delayed due to our Valentine's Dinner. We learned about our Golf Tournament, Student Appreciation, Book Sale and the possibility of Challenge Air coming back in October.

17- We had our fantastic Valentine's Dinner at our second evening meeting this month.  We had a full house for our steak dinner with all the trimmings.  Everywhere you looked you saw red, hugs and tons of love within our Club and their spouses!

10- Harley shared the 1st place CPS award from our SoCal Quarterly last Saturday.  A reminder that our Book Sale will be on March 12.        Dr. Ray Ashley, CEO of the Maritime Museum spoke to us about the Recreating Juan Cabrillo's ship, the San Salvador at Spanish Landing this year. He educated us with a power point presentation about the travels by waterways that he took to discover San Diego in 1542.

  3-Our evening meeting was a potluck dessert that showcased our Girls Oratorical competition.  It was again run by our wonderful Fran Cornell and was an inspiring evening.  Many different ideas were shared by these girls on the topic "If I Were the Leader of the Free World". The winner of this and our boys contest next month will then go onto our Zone Oratorical Oratorical Contest in March.
